"Our Gardens" is the quarterly journal of the Garden Clubs of Australia Inc. 2008 WINTER ISSUE
2008 Winter Issue Summary The Quarterly Journal of The Garden Clubs of Australia Inc The cover image is of Gordonia axillaris, a beautiful small tree with lovely white flowers from Southeast Asia. It will light up a winter garden and will grow in most parts of Australia. Vireya rhododendrons are attractive and excellent shrubs. Nurseryman and grower, Anton Vanderbyl, has great tips on growing them successfully (page 3) and, if asparagus is to your taste, Marcia Ajani ‘s article (page19) covers their requirements. A number of gardens, small and large and botanic– are featured. From Queensland there is a tropical private garden (page 6) and the Cairns Botanic Gardens (page 20); from the NSW Southern Highlands a cool climate garden (page 4) and from Sydney a small suburban garden (page 10). There is also historic Mt Oriell, now called Iandra, near Cowra (page23), NSW and, for travellers, Trentham Gardens in the UK (page 22). Rose lovers around the country should keep an eye out for ‘Let’s Celebrate’ a highly perfumed hybrid tea rose bred by Trevor Grant to mark the centenary of The Rose Society of South Australia. The highlight for the Society will be the Convention of the World Federation of Rose Societies in Adelaide from 23 October to 1 November. (Details page 8). There are practical tips from Tasmanian gardener, Bill Chestnut, on growing native plants in pots. He says watering is the key – get that right and you’ll be well on the way to healthy plants. David and Anne Maher spent three weeks Outback last year and captured the unique flora of that area on camera (pages16/17). A hardy native plant, the Mountain Devil, is recommended by Jeff Howes, a dedicated grower of native plants, who also deals with the problem of Dendrobium beetle (page 18). Readers’ favourite or unusual plants feature in Your Choice on pages 14/15 and there are more photographs from the 2007 Photo competition on pages 24/25. Members of affiliated garden or flower clubs who would like to enter the 2008 Photo Competition can obtain entry forms from the Editor – the closing date for entries is 25 August. As usual club news includes diary dates and last, but not least, New Releases and Books on the inside back page.
